How Can I Keep From Singing? – Upper Canada Choristers’ 25th Anniversary Concert

0

The Upper Canada Choristers, a mixed choir founded in 1994, celebrate a quarter century of bringing joy to audiences in concert halls, churches, hospitals, chronic care facilities, seniors’ residences and many other spaces.  The choir has commissioned and premiered new music, collaborated with many artists, and encouraged music in the schools.

Co-founder Laurie Evan Fraser conducts a program with the theme of love, including Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre, as well as a cappella arrangements of Beatles songs; and Laurie Evan Fraser’s setting of Blessing-Bendicion.

Highlight is the world premiere of Teasdale Love Songs by Stephen Chatman, a song cycle in six movements set to the poetry of Sara Teasdale, and commissioned for the anniversary.  Laurie Evan Fraser describes the cycle as “a stunning work that highlights various aspects of love, from the tender to the ebullient, from the mystery of love to the pain after love fades, and then finally the euphoric joy of requited love.”

Cantemos, the choir’s accomplished Latin ensemble, will perform love songs from Argentina and Uruguay and a song created for the Latin ensemble by Venezuelan composer César Alejandro Carrillo, with poetry by Cantemos member Jacinto Salcedo.

In keeping with the UCC tradition of inviting a children’s choir as a guest on its spring concert, children from the Maurice Cody Junior Public School will perform under their conductor, Carole Snow, and combine with the Choristers for some numbers.

Free for children and teens free when accompanied by an adult.  Patrons are invited to bring a non-perishable item for the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Two days later, the UCC leave for a “Peace Through Music Tour of Japan”, an opportunity to share the choir’s model of community service with Japanese choirs.
