Since recording her ground-breaking song Universal Soldier in 1964, Saskatchewan-born Buffy Sainte-Marie has forged an international career as a musical innovator and social activist, championing Indigenous causes and spearheading humanitarian struggles. She has never stopped creating music and never stopped being a tireless force for human rights.

Along the way, she has chalked up some notable firsts. In 1969, she released Illuminations, the first quadraphonic electronic vocal album ever recorded. She won an Academy Award in 1983 as co-writer for Up Where We Belong from the movie An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming the only Indigenous person to receive an Oscar. During five years on Sesame Street, she broke ground in 1977 by breastfeeding her son Dakota “Cody” Starblanket Wolfchild on national television. And her songs have been covered by a veritable Who’s Who of the music world: Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, Glen Campbell, Janis Joplin, Donovan, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. Universal Soldier, which has been described as the definitive anti-war anthem of the 20th century, was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005.

Over the years, her music has evolved from acoustic folk to include rock and country influences, always given the unique stamp of her trademark vibrato voice. Her latest album, Medicine Songs, proves her dedication to her music and social activism is as strong as ever. Its 19 songs deal with topics such as the environment, conflict resolution, Indigenous realities, greed and racketeering. She is still a force to be reckoned with and an artist to be cherished.
