BACH AND ITALY

“Amsterdam, 1717. A young German prince is about to leave the city, his trunks full of music that he hastened to take back to his court. He takes with him a volume of the Estro Armonico, Vivaldi’s collection of violin concertos published a few years earlier. The Prince was impatient, keen to introduce this music to his newly-appointed court Kapellmeister: a certain Johann Sebastian Bach… It is from this extraordinary encounter between two musical geniuses, via interposed manuscripts, that the program for this concert was born. Here you’ll appreciate the talents of Bach as an arranger, transposing the virtuosity of Vivaldi’s violins to the keyboards of the organ with his characteristic mastery. It’s an opportunity to discover how, in the course of copies and arrangements, the exuberant sensitivity of the Italian style rubs off on the German master’s original compositions”. (Le Cercle des Amis d’Etienne Berny)
