Created in 1984, the play Albertine en cinq temps by Michel Tremblay features a 70-year-old woman who, in the room of a CHSLD, rehashes her memories at different stages of her life. At 30, Albertine already suspects that the immensity of the sky will never be able to contain her rage for life…
This character of Albertine, over time, represents the archetype of the Québécois and Catholic mother, of the working class before the Quiet Revolution. Half a century after the Great Darkness, women acquired rights; mothers and families have changed, religion has transformed and culture has evolved. And yet, despite all this evolution, Albertine’s rage remains. As such, are the choices of lots and existences so different for Albertine’s children than for the one who preceded them?
Placing the whole woman in search of freedom in the face of her deep expression and in the face of her relationship with a hostile and suffocating society which has always kept her in a cage, Albertine has established herself as an essential choice for the collective of women led by Nathalie Deschamps, director and producer. This first opera in Joual will also celebrate the 80th birthday of the great author and playwright Michel Tremblay. Six singers and 5 musicians will give life to the creation of this captivating music by Catherine Major on the libretto of the Collectif de la Lune Rouge.
Because we are all your Albertines.
