2024 Juno Award Nominations: Jazz and Classical Highlights

The 2024 Juno Award nominations were announced earlier today. Quebec’s Charlotte Cardin leads the pack with an impressive six nominations, while Daniel Caesar and Talk have each received five. 

 
Nominations for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year include Songwriter, by Alex Bird and Ewen Farncombe; You’re Alike, You Two, by Gaity Gyorgy and Mark Limacher; Little Bit a’ Love by Denielle Bassels; Our Roots Run Deep, by Dominique Fils-Aimé; and Your Requests, by Laila Biali. Day Moon by Christine Jensen; Walls Made of Glass by Gentiane MG; Sonic Bouquet by Jocelyn Gould; Twelve by Noam Lemish; and The South Detroit Connection by Russ Macklem each take home nominations for Jazz Album of The Year (Solo). In the Jazz Album of the Year (Group), category are Migrations by Allison Au, with the Migrations Ensemble; Septology-The Black Forest Session by the Canadian Jazz Collective; Cry Me A River by Hilario Duran and His Latin Jazz Big Band; Recent History by Mike Murley & Mark Eisenman Quartet; and Convergence by Nick Maclean Quartet feat. Brownman Ali. 

Alexandra Stréliski’s Néo-Romance, Colin Stetson’s When we were that what wept for the sea, Haralabos (Harry) Stafylakis’ Calibrating Friction, Markus Floats’ Fourth Album, and Meredith Bates’ Tesseract all received nominations for Instrumental Album of the Year

The Juno Awards name winners in four categories dedicated to classical music. Classical Album of the Year nominees this year include Baraba Hannigan, for Infinite Voyage; James Ehnes for Nielsen: Violin Concerto, Symphony No. 4; Marc-André Hamelin for Fauré: Nocturnes & Barcarolles; Matt Haimovitz for De Hartmann: Cello Concerto; and Suzie LeBlanc for mouvance. In the Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble) category are Bekah Simms: Bestiaries by Cryptid Ensemble, Ensemble Contemporain de Montreal; Maxime Goulet: Symphonie de la tempête de verglas by the Orchestre Classique de Montréal, conducted by Jacques Lacombe; Sibelius 3 & 4 by Orchestre Métropolitain, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin; Mahler: Symphony No. 5 by the Orchestre Symphonique De Montreal, conducted by Rafael Payare; and Rachmaninoff: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3; Isle of the Dead by the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Nézet-Séguin. 

Andrew Armstrong and James Ehnes (Mythes), Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà (Portrait: Alex Baranowski), Cheng² Duo (Portrait), Constantinople (Il Ponte di Leonardo) and Les Barocudas (Basta parlare!) have received nominations for Classical Album of the Year (Small Ensemble)

Classical Composition of the Year nominations go to Simulacra by Amy Brandon, Portrait of an Imaginary Sibling by Dinuk Wijeratne, …and the Higher Leaves of the Trees Seemed to Shimmer in the Last of the Sunlight’s Lingering Touch of Them… by Emilie Cecilia LeBel, Shāhīn-nāmeh, for Voice and Orchestra by Iman Habibi, and Don’t Throw Your Head in Your Hands by Nicole Lizée.
