Réflexions

Francis Choinière, piano

GFN Productions, 2025

Francis Choinière has swapped his conductor’s baton for the piano keyboard, and now brings us his first solo album of compositions. Revisiting melodies from his youth or working with new material, the young conductor of Orchestre FILMharmonique and the Orchestre Philharmonique et Chœur des Mélomanes has given himself a great gift by recording these five tracks, symbols of reconnection with himself, on the Steinway at Maison symphonique.

Here we find a neoclassical language in the vein of Stréliski or Einaudi. Soaring music with timeless echoes—between its arpeggios and harmonic progressions unfolds an ambience of sonic travelling. The melancholic rubs shoulders with the nostalgic, leading to the ethereal and the dark; one work follows another like so many stages on a soothing journey. Coup de foudre, Unveiled, Renaissance, Rêverie and I’ll be here are different facets of the same message: an invitation to slow down, to rest, and to escape for a few moments from the stifling ocean current that sets the pace of our lives.

A “soundscape of memories” according to the composer, who sees these Réflexions as the “starting point of a great musical adventure,” this album with its enveloping atmosphere will charm lovers of contemplation. It is a welcome respite for Choinière from his hectic schedule, between contracts as a conductor and the management of GFN Productions.
