Throughout his life, Berlioz was fascinated by the theatre. He regarded Shakespeare as a true master of tragedy, a kindred spirit, an alter ego two centuries removed. The famous actress Harriet Smithson, whom Berlioz saw perform on stage in Romeo and Juliet, would become his muse and later his wife. She was the source of a consuming flame, his inspiration, especially in the creation of his symphonie dramatique, Roméo et Juliette. Susan Graham, the reigning queen of French opera for the past two decades, joins Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain for an evening of pure romanticism.
