Hector Berlioz is best known for the drug-fueled fever dream he created with his volcanic Symphonie fantastique, but in his song collection Les Nuits d’été (Summer Nights), we experience a more intimate, melancholy side to the French composer. Written as Berlioz’s marriage was falling apart, Les Nuits d’été offers poignant musical meditations on love, loss, and longing that will be brought to life by the celebrated French Canadian mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne.
Feelings of love and longing are also woven throughout a pair of symphonic poems by the French composer Mel Bonis, Ophélie, which evokes the tragic life and death of Shakespeare’s heroine; and Salomé, inspired by the fabled princess of Judea whose unrequited love for John the Baptist leads to murderous rage.
Following the first half of French miniatures, Franz Schubert’s final symphony—known as “The Great”—pushes the boundaries of the symphonic form in ways that were only matched in his day by Ludwig van Beethoven. From the pastoral calm of its opening horn calls to dances tinged with nostalgia and sadness and an adrenaline-fueled finale that ends in triumph, Schubert’s “Great” Symphony delivers a breathtaking musical experience.
