What a whirlwind the last few weeks have been! The Montreal Canadiens took fans in Canada and abroad on a wild ride that stopped short of their 25th Stanley Cup. Thanks to some stirring singing from tenor Marc Hervieux, the Habs won the anthem portion of the finals, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to carry the day on the ice.

The other positive has been the rising numbers of double COVID vaccinations across Canada, which bode well for the reopening of the arts. According to a survey by Nanos (see p. 9), arts administrators across Canada feel that vaccination is the key to a return to normalcy. Just before we went to press, Ontario announced the acceleration of its reopening to July 16, the day this issue comes out. With talk of a vaccination passport required for dining out and live performances in the event of another wave, we encourage all to get vaccinated.

Our festival guide for advertisers is on p. 8. We profile several festivals that are still active this summer. Please check our events calendar (p. 42), our online calendar at mySCENA.org and the organization’s website for access to the latest info. And some arts organizations, such as the LMMC (p. 18) and the Orchestre Classique de Montréal (p. 20) have already announced their 2021-22 seasons.

Cover and Content

Our cover spotlights the operatic version of Albertine, en cinq temps, Michel Tremblay’s famous play. Our extensive seven-page feature includes interviews with Tremblay, composer Catherine Major, and the five singers (Chantal Lambert, Monique Pagé, Chantal Dionne, Michèle Losier, and Catherine St-Arnaud) who portray Albertine at different stages of her life.

Tafelmusik’s music director emerita Jeanne Lamon passed away on June 20. We reprint Natasha Gauthier’s 2006 interview on p. 16.

Subscription and Donation Drive

Because of the pandemic, we have changed from street distribution to home delivery. Many of you are holding a free sample issue. We hope we have sparked your interest with our passionate team of writers and editors. To make sure you continue to receive the magazine at home, please become a subscriber or give a subscription to someone special. It makes an ideal gift for parents or an artist.

The pandemic has affected all media. In March 2020 we wrote to our regular supporters asking them to donate earlier in the year than normal. This helped us weather the storm. As the outlook remains uncertain, we hope you will continue to donate early and help through a subscription.

As always, La Scena Musicale maintains a vigorous presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Our website offers new resources daily. Pandemic or no pandemic, the arts will thrive. As will La Scena Musicale.

Have a great musical and artistic summer!
