Posted to the Opéra de Montréal’s website yesterday, the company has cancelled Mozart’s Magic Flute, its last production of its 2019-20 season, which was to have run rom May 16 to 26 at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier. Here is the letter on its site:

Dear friends and opera lovers,

Today would have been a full day of costume fittings for The Magic Flute. Members of our chorus would have been busy preparing for their first rehearsal. Soon, with the production of wigs, costumes, and accessories well underway, our cast of international singers would have gathered here in Montréal to bring Barrie Kosky’s legendary staging to life in our opera house: an intense production schedule that would span eight weeks and involve over 200 artists, artisans, musicians, and technicians.

As you know, all of this is now no longer possible. As a result, and with the health and safety of our audience and entire team in mind, all upcoming performances of The Magic Flute scheduled from May 16 to 26 in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier are cancelled.

However, in this time that is so difficult for the arts community, we humbly asked buyers of tickets for The Magic Flute to consider supporting the mission of the Opéra de Montréal by transforming the value of their ticket (s) into a donation.

If you too want to support your opera house and help us ensure the success of the 2020-2021 season, DONATE HERE.

For any questions or information, we invite you to contact a customer service agent during the next few days. You can reach our Box Office either by phone (514.985.2258) or by e-mail ([email protected]). The team is available Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

We at the Opéra de Montréal are taking all the necessary steps to get you back here as soon as safely possible. We understand that the consequences of this pandemic affect many people and we sincerely sympathize with them.

Thank you for your love of opera and for being part of our community. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you at the opera again soon. Until then, we promise to keep you updated.

Warmly and gratefully,

The Opéra de Montréal
