On Oct. 18, tenor Josh Lovell will be the only Canadian to compete in this year’s Operalia competition, which takes place at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The Victoria native is no stranger to the historic Russian theatre, having recently made his debut there as Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia a few weeks before everything shut down in February 2020.

In the last few years, Lovell has been particularly successful in the competition circuit. In 2018, he won the Grand Prize and the Opera Prize at the 52nd Annual International Vocal Competition ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, the second place in the Dallas Opera competition and third place of the Marcello Giordani Foundation competition. In June he was crowned winner of the 39th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition.

Canadians rarely have the occasion to hear Lovell live, especially at the opera. While he has sung Mozart’s Requiem with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Handel’s Messiah with the Victoria Symphony, a return engagement at Pacific Opera Victoria was cancelled because of the pandemic. However, like many of his North American colleagues, Lovell has found success in Europe. After completing his tenure at the Ryan Opera Center in Chicago in 2019, he was immediately invited to join the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper. In his first season with the company, he performed the roles of Don Ottavio, Don Ramiro, Ernesto, Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lurcanio in Ariodante and Ruodi in Guillaume Tell.

Future engagements in Vienna include Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Fenton in Falstaff, Noboru in Henze’s Das verratene meer and Andres in Wozzeck. He will also make house debuts at Teatro alla Scala as Ferdinand in Thomas Adès’s The Tempest and at the Glyndebourne Festival as Ernesto in Don Pasquale.
