Jordan de SouzaJordan de Souza, 28, gets appointed as Kapellmesiter at the Komische Oper Berlin for the 2016-2017 season. The Toronto-born conductor was named the Head of Music at Germany’s Komische Oper Berlin last year. He will conduct a new production and a symphony concert in the orchestra’s series among the approximate 45 performances this season.

Rock’n’roll legend, Chuck Berry who celebrates his 90th birthday today, announced he is releasing a new album next year. The album titled Chuck comes 38 years after his last album.

Pianist Yuja Wang was named the 2017 artist of the year of Musical America. The piano virtuoso studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

Susanna Malki, chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, was named conductor of the year. She will make her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in December and become the principal guest conductor at the Los Angeles Philharmonic next season.

Andrew Norman is the composer of the year, bass-baritone Eric Owens is the vocalist of the year and Eighth Blackbird, a sextet celebrating their 20th anniversary, are the ensemble of the year.

 

The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) presented a new instrument yesterday on the Maison Symphonique’s stage: the octobass. The rare three-strings instrument is two times bigger than a bass, measuring over 3 meters and with an even more low-pitched sound. The OSM is the only orchestra in the world who owns an octobass.

 

Nathalia Milsten won the prize of young soloist of the public francophone media 2017. Born in a Russian musician family, she learns the piano at the age of four. In 2015, she becomes the first woman to win the First Prize of the Dublin International Piano Competition.
