  • The Elmar Oliviera International Violin Competition (EOIVC) announced its 20 candidates. The competition takes place from January 22 to February 5, 2017 at the Lynn Conservatory of Music in Florida. The EOIVC offers a grand prize of $30,000, performance opportunities, and management and public relations support. From 80 applicants of 16 countries, the candidates are aged between 19 and 30, from eight countries and known from the competitive circuit.
    Here’s the list: Christopher Tun Andersen (24, Norway), Wonhee Bae (29, South Korea), Aaron Chan (20, Hong Kong), Brian Kwan Yeung Choi (22, China), Sirena Huang (22, United States), Ho-Hsuan Feng (21, Taiwan), Luke Hsu (26, United States), Ari Isaacman-Beck (31, United States), Alina Ming Kobialka (19, United States), Erzhan Kulibaev (30, Kazakhstan), Li Lao (29, China), Jiyoon Lee (24, South Korea), Quanshuai Li (25, China), Christine Seohyun Lim (22, United States/South Korea), Max Yiming Mao (22, China), Dongfang Ouyang (26, China), Ji Won Song (23, South Korea), Elly Suh (27, United States/South Korea), Chiharu Taki (29, Japan) and Hannah Tarley (25, United States).

 

  • Daniel Ciobanu (Romania) wins Bndes International Piano Competition. He will receive £28,300 (CAD $47,075) and will play concerts in Brazil, Europe and United States in the 2017-2018 season. Joo Hyeon Park (South Korea) won second prize and an audience award, worth £19,500 (CAD $32,430) and Andreas Ionnides (UK) won third prize, £14,150 (CAD $23,535). Lucas Thomazinho (Brazil) received the award for best performance of Brazilian music and Liza Kliuchereva (Russia) won the Ginastera award for best interpretation of a piece by the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera.

  • Italian violinist and violist Greta Medini died at the age of 26. Local media suggested she fell to her death from a motorway overpass near the Italian town of Pizzo.

 

  • Vienna Philharmonic promoted Gerhard Marschner to principal viola. The 32-year-old’s appointment starts on September 2017.
