  • A concert recorded in Geneva in September will be broadcast on the radio today Thursday November 10 at 8 p.m on ICI Musique and on television on Saturday November 12 at 1 p.m. at ICI ARTV. The concert supports press cartoonists who are threatened in the home countries. Two cartoonists, Chappatte and Plantu, were on stage with the Suisse Romande Orchestra who interpreted Beethoven’s Third Symphony.

  • The Sony Centre announced a multi-year film concert series featuring the first two films of Harry Potter. In a partnership with CineConcerts and Attila Glatz Concert Productions, the Sony Centre presents Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on June 27 and 28, 2017 and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on October 12 and 13, 2017. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra will perform the Oscar-nominated score of John Williams and will be conducted by Justin Freer, producer of CineConcerts.

  • Bernhard Boss, well-known publisher of music education works, died on Tuesday at the age of 94. He founded with Eckart Rohlfs, Musikalische Jugend in 1952, which was renamed Neue Musikzeitung in 1969.

 

  • British conductor Duncan Ward, 26, is making his debut at the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. He is taking over the Wien Modern concert on Sunday November 13 at short notice. Ward is the Principal Conductor of Sinfonia Viva and also the Associate Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

  • The Salzburg Festival will offer new opera productions such as Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, William Kentridge’s staging of Berg’s Wozzeck and Aribert Reimann’s Lear. The new Aida, which stars Anna Netrebko, will be directed by Iranian-born artist and filmmaker Shirin Neshat.

 

  • Branka Stilinović, Zagreb opera star, died last Friday in Rijeka and was buried yesterday in Zagreb. She was the lead soprano of the Croatian National Opera in Zagreb for three decades. She also sang in Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and Poland.

 

  • Die Musik in Geschicte und Gegenwart (MGG), the largest and most comprehensive German encyclopedia about music, has put all of its content online. The opening paragraph of articles and essential dates are available for free. There are also free trial offers but to read more, you need to subscribe. The MGG offers in-depth articles on music, as well as literature, philosophy and visual arts.

 

  • Decca Classics announced the signing of 17-year old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, winner of BBC Young Musician 2016. He is the first black musician to win the award in the 38 years of the concert’s history. His first recording will feature Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto no. 1, which he performed at the BBC concert. The Nottingham cellist signed the contract on his own bus, named after him by the City Council after his triumph at BBC Young Musician.
