Nelly, the Film

Isabelle Fortier – known by her penname, Nelly Arcan – published her first novel Putain (Whore) in 2001. Her controversial book about the life of a prostitute, inspired by her personal experience, was a major hit in the French literary world. Award-winning filmmaker Anne Émond signs her third feature film, inspired by the controversial life and works of Nelly Arcan. Mylène Mackay portrays Nelly, a woman torn by multiple identities of a writer, lover, whore, and star. The film begins with her literary debut and follows the events leading to her suicide. In theatres January 20 (French with English subtitles). www.nelly-lefilm.com

The Maple Spring Revisited

In 2012, thousands of students held demonstrations against Quebec’s tuition fee increase while adorning themselves with little red squares. In Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves (Ceux qui font les révolutions à moitié n’ont fait que se creuser un tombeau), four young adults decide to continue the revolution by creating mayhem in the streets of Montreal. Filmmakers Mathieu Denis and Simon Lavoie present a three-hour film that blends documentary footage and a fictional tale of young rebels wanting to continue a revolution. Named best Canadian feature at the TIFF, the jury called it an “uncompromising, electrifying portrait of youthful idealism.” In theatres February 3 (French with English subtitles).
