Part of the Canada Life Little Kids Concerts

Vancouver, Canada (March 15, 2021) — The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the CANADA LIFE LITTLE KIDS CONCERTS presentation of An Alphabet of Songs. The performance starts streaming this Saturday, March 20 at 10:30 AM PT in TheConcertHall.ca presented by TELUS.

The VSO School of Music’s early learning expert Gillian Hunter-Gibbs joins members of the VSO to host a delightful morning of musical discovery and learning for the VSO’s youngest audience members. The musical pieces in this concert are short excerpts from some of the most popular works for orchestra with music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Sergei Prokofiev, Antonín Dvořák and more. Based on the book An Alphabet of Songs produced by the VSO School of Music.

The Canada Life Little Kids Concerts are aimed at children of young ages, from toddlers to four or five years old. The concerts are of shorter length and designed to encourage audience participation. They provide an opportunity to expose children to classical music – delivered in a very kid-friendly manner –, the orchestra and its instruments, all from the comfort of your own home.

ABOUT THE VSO SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Envisioned by Bramwell Tovey (Music Director Emeritus), Arthur H. Willms (Honorary Life Vice President) and Jeff Alexander (former VSO President and CEO) in 2003, the VSO School of Music was created to provide a modern educational institution next to the Orpheum Theatre, where students of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds could enjoy lifelong learning and the majority of instructors would be members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Macdonald Development Corporation was approached by the VSO to buy the Capital 6 movie theatre that formerly occupied the site, with the intention of building a music school: the concept, including a residential tower above, was immediately embraced by the company. Wall Financial Corporation later took over the lead role in the project and oversaw the construction of the school and residential tower designed by Bingham Hill Architects.

Made possible through the City of Vancouver’s Cultural Amenity Bonus Program, the residents of British Columbia have now been provided with a new community music school, serving students from 3 months old to senior citizens, catering to all ability levels from beginners to aspiring professionals.

For the 2020-21 special season, the VSO may be heard in its new virtual home, TheConcertHall.ca, presented by TELUS.
