Vancouver, Canada (March 18, 2021) — Today the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra announced that the 7th season of the VSO Institute (VSOI) will take place from July 5 to 16, 2021. Talented young musicians from around the world will come together for a one-of-a-kind educational program with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and VSO School of Music.

Applications are now open to musicians, ages 14-28, for three exciting, inspirational musical experiences: the Professional Training Program and Young Musicians Program will be offered virtually from July 5-16, and the VSOI Chamber Music Intensive will be an in-person program for students local to the Greater Vancouver area, taking place June 12-July 4.

The theme of this year’s VSOI is “Rejuvenate!” Led by Maestro Otto Tausk, students are mentored by an outstanding faculty of VSO musicians and VSO School of Music faculty members, participating in activities ranging from masterclasses, performance fundamentals classes, private lessons, and virtual ensembles, to interactive webinars on topics including career development, musician health and wellness, repertoire, and performance practice.

Maestro Tausk commented “We are thrilled to once again welcome young musicians from around the world for another exciting VSO Institute season. While we wish we could meet all of these talented musicians in-person, we have the incredible opportunity to reach out to them this year, wherever they may be in the world, through our virtual programs. I have a very fond memory of watching our masterclass with James Ehnes last season with musicians from Michigan, Kazakhstan, interior BC and Abbotsford. We look forward to reaching even further afield this season.”

The Professional Training Program offers in-depth performance and mentorship experiences for advanced instrumentalists (age 15-28), conductors, and composers aspiring to a career in music. New this year, the Young Musicians Program is designed for dedicated, motivated intermediate and advanced high school instrumentalists (age 14-18) looking to improve their skills, deepen their experience with music, and spend time with other like-minded students. The VSOI Chamber Music Intensive is another new program offering in-person rehearsal, recording, and performance activities, with COVID-19 safety measures in place.

All participating VSOI students are Students receive access to the VSO’s digital concert hall, TheConcertHall.ca, where they can enjoy a full season of VSO performances as well as the VSO’s virtual learning zone, The Music Room.
