Vancouver Opera and Fitness Town Launch First Opera Wellness Program in Canada

VANCOUVER, April 10, 2019 /CNW/ – Vancouver Opera and Fitness Town today announced the collaboration between the charity and the fitness equipment provider to launch the official Vancouver Opera wellness program.

Azfir Balenciaga, a Vancouver Opera staff member, initiated a Vancouver Opera wellness program for staff, volunteers, orchestra, chorus and visiting artists but was challenged with their limited fitness equipment and the charity’s budget.

Fitness Town’s CEO, James Newman, personally assessed the Vancouver Opera fitness needs and selected the organization as a recipient of their “Fit Fund” community program. He outfitted the team by donation with quality brand cardio, strength and high intensity interval training (HIIT) fitness equipment to enable them to meet their team fitness and wellness goals.

“Our company’s mission is to help people have a healthy life and ‘always keep moving’ in their homes and offices,” says Fitness Town CEO, James Newman.  “I am certain investing in the Vancouver Opera’s wellness program will create a positive impact for the team and the organization’s culture.”

Investing in workplace wellness initiatives within an organization has positive effects on employees’ health and the company’s health. The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine published research demonstrating that being physically active less than once a week is associated with reduced workplace productivity of approximately three hours per week compared to a physically active individual.

Statistics Canada researchers review of the Canada Health Measures Survey found that only 15 per cent of adults were meeting the recommended criteria of exercising for 150 minutes per week. According to Treadmill Review, 77% of people would work out more if their employer had a gym they could use during work hours.

Fitness Town’s significant equipment donation also benefits the next generation of performers. The Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program trains young artists to manage their opera careers, including building strength and endurance required for the demanding (often three hour) roles.

“We are thrilled to start breaking the incorrect opera stereotypes today. To sing opera, it requires tremendous strength in the body. We are very grateful to Fitness Town for their support,” said Azfir Balenciaga, Vancouver Opera Development Manager.
