The Ukrainian Dmytro Choni has won the first prize and golden medal of the 19th Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition

Santander, August 5th 2018.- This evening has been held the Closing Gala and Awards Ceremony of the 19th Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition.

The event has been attended by the President of the Government of Cantabria, Miguel Ángel Revilla; the Mayoress of Santander, Gema Igual; and the President of the Albéniz Foundation and of the Santander Piano Competition, Paloma O’Shea.

The Gala, presented by Eva Sandoval, has begun with the six finalists’ performance of Khachaturian’s “Sabre dance” (arrangement by Walden Hughes for 2 pianos and 12 hands).

After Mrs. Paloma O’Shea’s brief speech, Miguel Ángel Revilla has handed in the Finalist Prizes to Federico Nicoletta (Italy), Lucas Thomazinho (Brazil) y Juan Carlos Fernández-Nieto (Spain).

Luis Olaya-González, Business & Information Services Director, together with the Notary Public Rafael Segura Báez, have handed in the Canon Audience Award to Juan Carlos Fernández-Nieto. The Canon Audience Award consists of a series of premium products of Canon and it is decided through the voting of those attending the Finals on August 3rd and 4th at the Argenta Hall of the Palacio de Festivales.

Afterwards, the President of the Jury, Joaquín Achúcarro, have read the decision of the Jury, bestowing the three First Prizes to:

Dmytro Choni (Ukraine), First Prize and Golden Medal. He has received 30,000€, a concert tour through Spain and abroad, and the recording of a CD for the Naxos label company.

Yutong Sun (People’s Republic of China), Second Prize “Bergé y Compañía” and Silver Medal. This prize includes 20,000€ and a concert tour through Spain and abroad.

Aleksandr Kliuchko (Russian Federation), Third Prize and Bronze Medal. He received 10,000€ and a concert tour through Spain and abroad.

The medals were handed in by the Mayoress of Santander, and the diplomas where delivered by the President of the Government of Cantabria.

The laureates offered a brief performance to the audience.

The Closing Gala has been live broadcast through TVE channel 2, www.rtve.es and the Competition’s YouTube channel.
