Kingston ON – The Isabel Bader Centre for Performing Arts (“the Isabel”) at Queen’s University announces its fall concert line-up and its IMAGINE Online Arts Festival.  Performance information, ticketing, and streaming information is available on www.queensu.ca/theisabel.

FALL LIVE PERFORMANCES

Fall performances include those by indie band Kasador, country singer Abby Stewart and band in a concert called Break Your Heart, Gryphon Trio with soprano Patricia O’Callaghan in their Broken Hearts & Madmen cabaret program on Bader Day (November 15, 2021), Iranian-Canadian virtuoso santur player Sadaf Amini and friends, TSO concertmaster Jonathan Crow with “CBC Who’s Hot Under 30” violinist David Baik in A Celebration of the Violin, a Chopin and Ravel concert with pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin, book launch and performance excerpts of Minerva by Suzanne Pasternak, and a Preludes for Piano concert (Chopin, Debussy,  and John Burge preludes) with pianist Philip Chiu.  These follow the August performances of Yolanda Bruno and Bryan and Silvie Cheng and that of Tiny Horse and Oakridge Ave (co-presented with KPP Concerts, part of the Kinaxis InConcert series supported by the Canadian Live Music Association). These will be live performances for limited live audiences as well as being streamed on the Isabel Digital Concert Hall and Isabel Facebook page.

There will also be the live workshop performance of ECHO: MEMORIES OF THE WORLD on October 7, 2021 at 7:30 PM with the Gryphon Trio and collaborators, following their creation-based residency at the Isabel. This work will use music, narration, images, and film to explore models of knowledge sharing and processes of truth and reconciliation in four areas of the world, asking the question: “HOW DO WE SPEAK TO THE FUTURE?”

IMAGINE ONLINE ARTS FESTIVAL

The Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts asked itself, “What CAN we do that would amplify the voices and creativity of artists, students, creators, and educators in a rapidly-evolving multi-platform world?”

Supported through the Ballytobin Foundation, the Isabel created its new IMAGINE Project Creation @ the Isabel program that supported Kingston artists and beyond in their creation-based artist and creator residencies, online arts education initiatives, film creation, audio recording creation, and high-fidelity streaming.

“Being an arts incubator at the Isabel is vitally important right now as the arts face three huge disruptive forces:  the digital revolution and distribution, EDII (equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigenization), and COVID-19,” states Isabel Director, Tricia Baldwin.  “At the Isabel, we are delving into all three forces as this is a period of unprecedented societal and cultural transformation to support artists in their creative explorations and to ensure vitality for the arts far into the future. Investing in artistic creation is crucial right now.”

ECHO: MEMORIES OF THE WORLD

Isabel resident ensemble Gryphon Trio and co-creators will perform the first workshop performance of their new work ECHO: MEMORIES OF THE WORLD on October 7th at 7:30 PM, at the end of their artist creation-based residency at the Isabel. This international multi-media project exploring the questions: “HOW DO WE SPEAK TO THE FUTURE? How are memories of enduring cultural importance passed on from generation to generation? How can we confront heavy truths to equip the next generations for the building of better societies?”

ECHO: MEMORIES OF THE WORLD will use music, narration, images, and film to explore models of knowledge sharing and processes of truth and reconciliation in four areas of the world. These include Canada (Pimachiowin Aki, the first ever UNESCO designated heritage site in Canada intended to protect the complex interrelationship between Indigenous people, the land, healing, and knowledge), Norway (the visionary Deichman Public Library of Oslo and its curation of Katie Paterson’s installation on the theme of environmental protection and knowledge preservation called “The Future Library” in addition to Sàmi cultural performances), Austria (Austrian National Library where Mozart studied), and Mali (Manuscript Collections of Timbuktu).

Project partners include: Gryphon Trio (violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, cellist Roman Borys, and pianist Jamie Parker), Alison Mackay (creator of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra’s Galileo Project and House of Dreams, project co-creator and concert designer of ECHO), Marion Newman (mezzo soprano of Kwakiutl and Stó:lo First Nations, English, Irish, and Scottish heritages), Nordic Voices (the six-member Norwegian vocal ensemble),  Diely Mori Tounkara (Malian kora player), Reneltta Arluk (project co-creator and Director of Indigenous Arts at the Banff Centre), Ry Moran (project co-creator and Founding Director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and currently Associate University Librarian – Reconciliation at UVic Libraries), Andrew Balfour (composer and Senate of Canada Gold Medal recipient for his contribution to Canada’s Indigenous and music communities), Rawdna Carita Eira (Sàmi poet and playwright), Anne Beate Hovind, curator of Norway’s Future Library, and Caroline Hollway (project manager).
