Montreal, January 11, 2021 – The Conseil québécois de la musique (CQM) will present the Prix Opus Hommage to Maestro Kent Nagano at the 24th edition of the Prix Opus gala, broadcast on the Facebook page of La Fabrique culturelle de Télé-Québec, on Sunday, February 7 at 4 p.m. This prize, awarded annually by the CQM’s Board of Directors, recognizes an individual’s exceptional contribution to the Quebec music scene.

In the sixteen years he has been musical and artistic director of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Kent Nagano has raised and maintained the level of excellence of this institution that is central to Quebec’s artistic life. In addition to the many recordings and tours that have earned the orchestra an international reputation, Maestro Nagano has been deeply rooted in the social fabric. Among other things, free outdoor concerts and visits to Aboriginal and Inuit communities in Northern Quebec and Canada demonstrated a desire to create ties with the population. In addition to allowing music lovers from here and elsewhere to discover the work of Quebec artists, performers and composers alike, Kent Nagano has also offered concerts showcasing emblems of popular culture such as the Montreal Canadiens. He is responsible for the Virée classique and a host of atypical events that introduced a wider audience to symphonic music. This, without neglecting the next generation of musicians, which he has supported on various occasions, notably through his involvement with Montreal’s major music schools. His name will forever be associated with the Maison symphonique, a dream that he made a reality in 2011 and which positions Montreal among the world’s great music scenes.

At the Prix Opus online gala on February 7, in addition to a tribute to Maestro Nagano, musical performances will be presented. Soprano Karina Gauvin, contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, pianist Olivier Godin, jazz trio Emie R Roussel Trio and traditional Quebec music group Le Vent du Nord will perform.

This event, accessible to the general public for the first time, will be hosted by Marc Hervieux, singer and host of ICI Musique, while Catherine Perrin will conduct interviews with surprise guests.

Created in 1996, the Prix Opus highlight the excellence and diversity of concert music in Quebec, in various musical repertoires: medieval, Renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, modern, contemporary, electroacoustic, jazz, world music and traditional Quebec music.
