QUEBEC, April 10, 2020 – In view of the need to extend health measures to protect Quebecers from COVID-19, the government of Quebec calls for the cancellation of festivals, public sporting and cultural events planned in Quebec up to August 31, 2020.

The announcement was made today by the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Caroline Proulx; the Minister of Culture and Communications, Ms. Nathalie Roy; and the Minister responsible for Education, Ms. Isabelle Charest.

This directive is issued in light of the evolution of COVID-19 in Quebec and especially the need to respect distancing measures of two meters for a longer period. With a view to protecting public health it is considered preferable to cancel festivals and other cultural and sporting gatherings, indoor and outdoor, for the summer period.

To offset the impact of the pandemic, the Québec government is exploring various forms of support for festivals and events that it finances through its departments and programs.

Quotations:

“Each year, festivals and events are at the heart of Quebec’s tourism, particularly during the summer season. They constitute powerful attractions to visitors from all places; they contribute to the economy of all our regions; and they are part of our culture, of our way of life. The Quebec government had to make a difficult but necessary decision. We are aware of the impact
that this represents for organizers, and we thank them for their contribution to the collective effort. We will be there to prepare for a strong recovery and promote Quebec and its festivals as soon as possible. ”

Caroline Proulx, Minister of Tourism

“If we choose to cancel festivals and events that make the heart of Quebec beat every summer, it is for the sole purpose of saving lives. Distancing remains one of the best ways to stem the COVID-19 pandemic and we want at all costs to avoid a second wave of infection. It is clear that the health emergency has serious repercussions for all artists, artisans and cultural partners. We will work together to restore the Quebec culture that we love, that adds to our well-being, that makes us proud and resides at the heart of our identity.”

Nathalie Roy, Minister of Culture and Communications

“Our priority remains to protect the health of the population. It has become clear that public sporting events cannot take place this summer. I would like to thank all the organizers and volunteers who help to make Quebec a vibrant place. I am sure that you will understand that the present context justifies our decision. In addition, we want young people to be able to return to their sporting activities as quickly as possible. We will continue our work so that as soon as possible, our young people can rejoin their teammates in soccer, baseball and other sports.”

Isabelle Charest, Minister for Education
