Quebec, July 14, 2022 – It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that the Orchestre symphonique de Québec announces the passing of its principal guest conductor, Maestro Bramwell Tovey. Even if he could not be present with us as much as we would have liked, during the last season, he was able to leave his mark within the Orchestra. His exceptional charisma and his great unifying and humanist qualities were particularly appreciated. We remember him as a good, generous and committed man. At this difficult time, our thoughts are with his children and his spouse.
Our orchestra has had the privilege of working with Maestro Tovey on many occasions. During each of his visits to the nation’s capital, he was able to unanimously amaze musicians and audiences with the quality of his musical direction, but also with his greatness of soul.
The “Phenomenon” Tovey was to conduct a series of six concerts with the Orchestra in 2022/2023. The Artistic Directors are working to ensure his replacement by presenting conductors who will reflect his talent, passion and self-sacrifice.
The concert of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec scheduled for this Saturday, July 16 at Domaine Forget, will be presented in his memory.
It was a privilege for the Orchestra and its 61 musicians to have been able to welcome and discover this larger-than-life man.
Rest in peace, Maestro Tovey.
