Montreal, August 8, 2022 – On Wednesday, Rafael Payare and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal will launch the 9th edition of the OSM CLASSICAL SPREE, Maestro Payare’s first. Themed The Americas, this unmissable summer festival is an opportunity for the Orchestra to strengthen its ties with the community and connect more directly with its public, through original and widely accessible events. Concerts starting at $10 as well as numerous other free performances and activities await music lovers of all ages, from August 10 to 14, 2022.

THE KICK-OFF

THE ESSENTIAL LARGE-SCALE OUTDOOR CONCERT: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10 AT 7:30 P.M.

Under the direction of Rafael Payare, the Orchestra will celebrate the richness of repertoire from the Americas in the Classical Spree’s inaugural outdoor concert, The Many Colours of the Americas. From the New World Symphony to Indigenous song (author Natasha Kanapé Fontaine and singer Jeremy Dutcher), West Side Story, and Cuban composer Paquito D’Riveira’s Trumpet Concerto, the OSM will be joined by many different guests to guide the public on a sweeping, timeless musical journey. The event takes place on the Olympic Park’s Esplanade. A memorable musical evening to delight the whole family, come rain or shine, no reservations required!

24 INDOOR CONCERTS

Music, surprises and artistic encounters are on the menu at the Classical Spree. In total, 24 fascinating concerts featuring high-calibre local and international artists from the Americas will take place, including soprano Jeanine De Bique, trumpeter Pacho Flores, violinist James Ehnes, saxophonist Steven Banks and pianists Sergio Tiempo and Bruce Liu, among others.  Several of these concerts are conducted by Rafael Payare. These are short performances of 45 to 60 minutes, enabling Festival-goers to soak up as much music as they want, while they make their way from one concert to another, enjoying free activities on the Festival’s site along the way. The OSM Classical Spree is THE classical music festival of Montreal!

FREE ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Talks and lectures, outdoor concerts, dance workshops, musical awakening: a host of free activities for all ages will be rolled out in the city’s core during these symphony-charged days. Passers-by can make a stop on Sainte-Catherine Street to take part in dance, percussion or drumline workshops. To unwind with the family, head to the Esplanade Tranquille to enjoy chamber music concerts, body percussion workshops for kids and yoga sessions accompanied by live classical music. For the little ones, the Pavillon Tranquille will host musical awakenings, a reading area, and story time in collaboration with the BAnQ. Several Place-des-Arts spaces will come to life throughout the weekend with chamber music concerts, instrument demonstrations, talks and lectures, and much more! And for a sneak peek at young emerging artists, Complexe Desjardins will be transformed into a concert hall hosting youth ensemble performances and amateur orchestras. More than 500 artists from throughout all the Americas will converge in Montreal to make this 9th OSM Classical Spree a real happening!

Before being named Music Director of the OSM, I already knew Montreal for its summer events, which transform the city’s downtown area into a veritable hive of activity, bringing music lovers from around the world together. This year, I am very proud to contribute to this cultural “explosion” at my very first Virée Classique leading the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. ”
— Rafael Payare, OSM Music Director

PARTITURA: NEW AT ESPACE OSM

The OSM is offering the public an opportunity to experience what it’s like to conduct an orchestra with its new virtual reality installation Partitura. First, participants choose their repertoire from a selection of works by Vivaldi, Dvořák and Ana Sokolović. Then, they find themselves behind the podium of the Maison symphonique in front of a string orchestra made up of OSM musicians! They can follow the score as it scrolls forward and with a virtual baton, select a group of instruments for a closer experience of all the sounds. A unique opportunity to demystify the conductor’s perspective and explore the language of classical music!

The Orchestre symphonique would like to warmly thank its public partners: the Secrétariat à la région métropolitaine, the Ministère du Tourisme du Québec, Canada Heritage, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Conseil des arts de Montréal, who all contribute to carrying out its summer activities.
