Vancouver, BC (May 24, 2022) – Join us from July 26 through August 6 for 13 fabulous concerts and two special events featuring artists from across Canada, the US and the UK at the 2022 Vancouver Bach Festival – Scottish Baroque and Other Traditions. In addition to a traditional concert hall, performances will take place in diverse locations such as in a pub, a public garden, and a cathedral.

It is well known that J.S. Bach employed instrumentalists for his church performances who often also played in taverns. We also know that the music for popular country dances such as the gavotte and gigue (jig), were reimagined by ‘serious’ composers of the time for courtly circles. Scottish Baroque, a fusion of Scottish traditional music combined with the virtuosity and style of 17th and 18th century Italian music, was born in a pub in Edinburgh’s medieval Old Town, where, the music of Corelli sat side by side with the rhythmic drive of local reels and jigs. Musicians of the day would play both repertoires, with the same enthusiasm for each, using the same technique and instruments. At this year’s Vancouver Bach Festival – Scottish Baroque and Other Traditions, audiences will hear traditional melodies weave throughout all the concerts presented.

We are delighted to welcome Scottish Baroque experts David McGuinness and David Greenberg, as Festival Artists-in-Residence. Both artists have dedicated their careers to the study of the Italian and Scottish composers of the 17th and 18th century – a lively and vibrant time in Scotland’s musical history. They are featured in many of the Festival concerts and events including Rondeau (July 26), A Curious Collection of Tunes (July 28), Fiddle & Figs (Aug.3) and Bach &Tunes-Multiple Voices for One (Aug.4) to name only four of the many in which they will appear..

New this year  – we have created an Emerging Artists Programme to introduce audiences to the next generation of early music artists. This year’s Emerging Artists are soprano Ellen Torrie, and violinist Marie-Nadeau Tremblay. They are featured in The Next Generation: Baroque Innovations on August 3rd and will make guest appearances at other concerts during the Festival.

New Faces

We are pleased to introduce you to two new members of EMV’s administration team. Next time you attend a concert or drop by the office, please give them a warm welcome.

Carmen Murphy – Donor Relations Manager

After a long career at a large financial institution, Carmen took on fundraising and donor development at a major local performing arts organization. Her shared love of music and the performing arts forged many strong relationships with donors over 13 years. Giving back to the community has also been important to Carmen, as she has volunteered for the Burnaby Art Gallery, the City of Burnaby and Burnaby RCMP. She enjoys baking, cooking, reading, travel and cheering on the Vancouver Canucks.

Natalie Rostov – Patron Services Manager

Natalie has joined us in this newly created position as we transition to using our own in-house ticketing system beginning with the 2022-23 regular season. Natalie is a graduate of the English Department Graduate Studies program of the University of British Columbia. Her research mainly focused on film adaptations of Philip K. Dick’s works. Before starting at EMV two weeks ago, Natalie was the office administrator of The First Nations Drum Newspaper and a shift manager at a small local restaurant. Aside from work, Natalie volunteers for Push International Performing Arts Festival and likes to spend her free time reading in the sun and taking photos.
