Summits of French Baroque vocal writing, Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s motets, both his jubilant Te Deum and his moving Miserere for the Jesuits, bear witness in music to the splendors and profound piety of the Grand Siècle. Hervé Niquet, for many years one of the great defenders of this repertoire, brings to life these masterpieces by the great musician, who was as learned as he was sensitive, with all the dynamism and eloquence that we know.

Musicians : Myriam Leblanc, dessus – Catherine St-Arnaud, dessus – Philippe Gagné, haute-contre – Aldéo Jean, taille – Dominique Côté, basse – Ensemble Clavecin en concert

Conductor: Hervé Niquet.

Hervé Niquet is a fully trained harpsichordist, organist, pianist, singer, composer, choral conductor, and orchestra conductor, and has had a decisive experience as a vocal coach at the Paris Opera with artists such as Rudolf Nureyev and Serge Lifar. In 1987, he founded Le Concert Spirituel with the primary ambition of reviving the great French motet. Since then, Le Concert Spirituel has established itself on the international scene as one of the leading ensembles in the interpretation of Baroque music, expanding its repertoire to include all styles and genres, from sacred music to opera and sinfonia, and rediscovering both known and unknown works by French, English and Italian composers of the period. His approach also includes a great personal involvement in educational activities with young musicians (Ambronay Academy, Jeune Orchestre de l’Abbaye aux Dames, Schola Cantorum, CNSMD de Lyon, McGill University in Montreal, the early music department of the CNSMD de Paris) or through multiple master classes and conferences. Passing on the fruits of his work on interpretation, the conventions of the time and the latest musicological discoveries, but also on the realities and demands of the musician’s profession, is essential for him.

In the same spirit and postulating that there is only one French music without any break throughout the centuries, Hervé Niquet conducts the great international orchestras with which he explores the repertoires of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal He has also conducted the Kanazawa Orchestra (Japan), the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, the Orchestra of the Staatstheater Nürnberg, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, the Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, the Orchestre national de Lyon, and the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen. His pioneering spirit in the rediscovery of works from this period led him to participate in the creation of the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Center for French Romantic Music in Venice in 2009, with which he carries out numerous projects.
