OCTOBER 7, 2020, VANCOUVER, B.C. – Vancouver Opera is excited to open their 2020–2021 digital season with the powerful lyrical tragedy La Voix humaine by Francis Poulenc.

The first digital work for Vancouver Opera is led by an all-female, all-Canadian trio: director Rachel Peake with soloist Mireille Lebel and Music Director Kinza Tyrrell.

“Our launch production, La Voix humaine, is an interesting parallel for our time with a lone woman isolated and reliant on her telephone for human contact,” said Tom Wright, Vancouver Opera General Director. “Our design and creative team are working together to create a unique digital offering of this work based on the 1930s play. The three women leading this production are familiar names to Vancouver Opera audiences and we are delighted to have this talented team working on our first digital production.”

Rachel Peake last directed La Cenerentola and The Marriage of Figaro for Vancouver Opera. “We have created a film noir inspired world that will bring this emotional piece to life and into the homes of our subscribers,” explains Peake. “Working on the inaugural digital production for Vancouver Opera is an exciting challenge and provides us an opportunity to give the audience views they wouldn’t have otherwise had. In this beautiful work, one performer and one piano create an intimate look into one night in the life of this woman as she struggles with connection both personally and physically through her telephone.”

Mezzo-soprano Mireille Lebel returns to Vancouver Opera following her last performance in the role of Siébel in Faust in 2019 and Cherubino in the 2017 production of The Marriage of Figaro. Joining her on piano is Kinza Tyrrell who is the Principal Répétiteur for Vancouver Opera and Music Director of Vancouver Opera in Schools. They are joined by set and costume designer Amir Ofek, lighting designer Jeremy Baxter and stage manager Theresa Tsang.
