The Company

A leading artist residency for Canadian opera singers and pianist opera coaches, the Atelier lyrique is a collaborative professional development springboard at the heart of the Opéra de Montréal. The Atelier lyrique’s mandate is to provide professional internships for emerging Canadian opera artists, combining training and stage experience, with the aim of ensuring a future for the opera world. Unique in Québec, the Atelier lyrique is the only program in Canada to train its artists in both French and English, a tailor-made, inclusive and diversity- friendly program that allows its artists to make their first contacts with professional life, expand their network and begin their career integration in a stimulating and enriching environment.

The context

Due to a retirement, Opéra de Montréal is looking for a replacement for the position of Director of the Atelier lyrique.

  • Participate in the development of a strong strategic vision that positions the Atelier lyrique as a unique professional development program in Canada;
  • Propose innovative concepts for the continued growth of the Atelier lyrique;
  • Develop extraordinary value for emerging opera artists preparing for a rapidly changing industry.

The role

Reporting to the General Director, and working collaboratively with the Artistic Director, as well as the high performing management team, the Director of the Atelier lyrique develops and leads all activities of the program in line with the artistic mandate and vision established in the OdM’s strategic plan. The Director defines the training programming and executes it in collaboration with staff and key faculty, directing the artists-in-residence of the program and all invited instructors/coaches and collaborators.

The sought head

  • Bachelor’s degree in music;
  • Excellent knowledge of voice, vocal technique, and opera repertoire;
  • Solid knowledge of the local, national, and international opera landscape;
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in a similar position in the artistic and pedagogical field;
  • Experience in budget management;
  • Excellent written and oral skills in French and English;
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Know-how

  • Develop a long-term plan for the development of the Atelier lyrique;
  • Direct auditions and recruitment to ensure that the most compelling emerging artists in Canada are represented;
  • Safeguard and advance the tenants of Equity Diversity and Inclusion;
  • Ability to build a large community of support with a strong network of artists and partners;
  • Work closely with the Artistic Director to develop chamber work programming and new works that focus on the Atelier lyrique artists-in-residence and local artists;
  • Work with Artistic Director to select appropriate performance opportunities throughout the OdM’s season programming;
  • Work with external partners to develop performance opportunities for our artists-in- residence;
  • Understand the ongoing transformation in the industry and articulate strategies and direction to take these changes into account;
  • Ensure that the training program allows for each artist to be well prepared for any performance assignment;
  • Lead team members in the distribution and execution of tasks in a collaborative spirit;
  • Establish the Atelier lyrique training programme plan and artistic activities in collaboration with the team;
  • Develop opportunities for operatic traning community in Montreal to participate in and benefit from our programs;
  • Support the development of composers and librettists through the creation of new chamber works;
  • Work closely with the Marketing and Communications to grow the profile of the programme with the public and the artist training markets;
  • Be a spokesperson for the program and the company, as coordinated by the Communications team;
  • Support the online presence and digital advancement of the program and our artists in residence;
  • Represent the program on a local and national scale;
  • Work closely with the Director of Development to implicate the artists in the philanthropic life of the company;
  • Attend donor and other funder’s recognition events;
  • Represent the Atelier de l’Opéra de Montréal at the Board of Directors meetings;
  • Collaborate on budget management with the Finance Department, Program Coordinator and Production Manager;
  • Coordinate the grant application process by participating in the data collection, writing and follow-up of applications, in collaboration with the Finance Director, the Program Coordinator and the Production Manager;
  • Draft contracts for artists-in-residence and letters of agreement with guest instructors;
  • Approve contracts with suppliers and other collaborators;
  • Participate in various projects related to the strategic development of Opéra de Montréal.
