Montreal, August 1st, 2020 — Quasar and the Trio Zukan are pleased to announce the names of the two composers selected to compose new works for the cultural exchange project between Quebec and the Basque Autonomous Community in partnership with Musikagile a k and the Le Vivier Groupe.

Miguel Matamoro and Émilie Girard-Charest have been chosen from among the numerous applicants who responded to our call for submissions launched throughout Quebec and the Spanish Basque country.

Quasar and the Trio Zukan would like to thank all those composers who proposed their candidacy, as well as the members of the Selection Committee who studied the dossiers submitted with great attention and interest. The committee members were knocked out by the caliber of the candidates as well as the creativity and diversity of the projects proposed.

The exceptional quality of her works, such as “Bestiary” written for Quasar, in conjunction with her experience with traditional or atypical instruments, are the main characteristics that attracted us to the candidacy of Émilie Girard-Charest. Her intention to develop her language for saxophone quartet along with the presence of accordion percussion and txistu promises a work of high artistic potential with new and surprising tonalities, but above all, it represents a major compositional challenge for such an atypical instrumentation., a challenge that Émilie is already facing with determination, courage and enthusiasm.

– Gorka Cathediano, Trio Zukan

Miguel Matamoro’s candidacy particularly impressed us with the richness of invention and the great refinement of his musical gesture. His sophisticated writing, both limpid and organic, won us over. His talent for developing musical material, the originality and effectiveness of his forms as well as his dramatic sense promise a most fruitful collaboration.

– Marie-Chantal Leclair, Quasar
