Montreal, Friday July 30, 2021 – It is with great regret that the members of the board of directors of the Canadian Music Competition announce the departure of their Executive and Artistic Director, Marie-Claude Matton.

She will be leaving her post at the end of September, after six years at the organization’s helm, to take up new challenges as the Director of the Instrument Collection and Relations with the Music Community at Canimex, working with its president Mr. Roger Dubois.

All board members sincerely thank Marie-Claude for her many years of professionalism and impassioned dedication to achieving the Competition’s goals and ensuring its development. We would especially like to mention her committed work in the particular context of the 2020 and 2021 editions, which took place during the global pandemic, requiring us to make essential adjustments to maintain our activities, while at the same time ensuring the safety of our candidates and the integrity of our mission to discover, support, and showcase the country’s finest young musicians.

“Over the six years I have held the position of Executive and Artistic Director, I have been deeply committed to furthering the organization’s development and reach. With the current team, and with the confidence that the members of the board of directors have placed in me, we have been able to achieve great things. From the restructuring of the programs to the celebration of the 60th anniversary, the enhancement of private funding, an increase in Canada-wide registrations, the creation of a regulation for chapter administration, two national benefit events in 2018 and 2019, and the preparation of a 2019-2022 strategic plan—these successes are the result of invaluable collaborations developed at each level of  the organization and the adherence to a shared vision; (…) It is therefore with a sense of having done my duty that I am leaving my position, ready to pass the torch to a new director who will meet the challenges that lie ahead. I sincerely thank the members of the board, the team, our sponsors and donors, the volunteers, the adjudicators and all of the participants for their confidence over the years” stated Ms. Matton.

For his part, Interim Chair of the board of directors Enrico D. Cremonese stated: “I congratulate Marie-Claude for having been a true asset to the Canadian Music Competition over the last few years. I had the pleasure of supporting her with the Competition’s first strategic plan, getting a chance to witness her skills, her passion, and her dedication to our organization. Marie-Claude has demonstrated, and continues to demonstrate, a vision that allows us to fulfill our mission of helping young musicians across Canada. In the past few years, she managed to continue the Competition’s activities despite the global health situation, while other well-established organizations suspended their pursuits. It goes without saying that the members of the Executive Committee, the participants, the volunteers, and I are all saddened by her departure, but we wish her much success with her future projects, which are in keeping with the promotion of classical music throughout Canada. I am also very pleased to announce that Marie-Claude will remain an invaluable advisor to the Executive Committee, will sit as a member on our board of directors, and, in these capacities, will continue to share her views in helping us prepare for the Competition’s next 60 years, with the collaboration of her successor, when that person has been appointed. Dear Marie-Claude, I wish you a continued successful career, and I am certain that we will have the pleasure of continuing to collaborate in the near future.”

On behalf of the big CMC family, all of the members of the board of directors reiterate their thanks to Marie-Claude for her many years of steadfast loyalty, wishing her all of the success she deserves in the next phase of her career.
