Montreal, Tuesday, February 25, 2020 – The Conseil des arts de Montréal is delighted to announce the internship proposals and the candidates selected for the new CultivART 2020 program in Montreal.

Included in the internships are 650 paid hours with a Montreal-based artistic or cultural organization, to be completed by July 31, 2020. As well, the Indigenous interns will receive about 150 hours of coaching by an Indigenous mentor. The mentors hail from various Indigenous communities across Canada and have extensive peer-recognized experience. Their hours will also be paid. They will support and coach the interns and will share with them and the host organizations their experience and knowledge of the workings of arts communities.

For this first edition of the program, the Conseil des arts de Montréal received 27 applications (11 organizations, 7 mentors and 9 interns). The selection committee was made up of four members of the Conseil’s Indigenous Arts Committee, including Kanien’kehá:ka artist Hannah Claus, who represents the Conseil’s Board of Directors on the Committee.

The Conseil des arts de Montréal has invested more than $100,000 to offer these internships.

• Remuneration for intern: $12,500 (artist’s fee for 650 hours at $19.23/hour);
• Remuneration for independent Indigenous mentor: $5,000 (150 hours at $33.33/hour);
• Hosting fee of $2,500 paid to the organization to cover internship expenses (supplies, costumes, partitions, computer equipment, etc.).

The projects selected for CultivART 2020 are:

The McCord Stewart Museum is hosting intern Catherine Boivin, mentored by France Trépanier.
The internship is taking place in the Museum’s Education, Community Engagement and Cultural Programs and will allow the intern to develop skills in museum outreach.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is hosting intern Nakasuk Alariaq, mentored by Heather Igloliorte.
The intern is working on exhibits showcasing Inuit art and culture in preparation for a planned 2021 exhibition.

Métèque Atelier d’art is hosting intern Jackson Coyes, mentored by Martin Akwiranoron Loft. Under the supervision of the artistic director, the intern is serving as a cultural worker at this collaborative art space, with his main objective being the development and promotion of Indigenous arts in Montreal’s urban communities.

The Montreal Indigenous Community NETWORK is hosting intern Kortanie Kahwennahawi Raye, mentored by Don Barnaby.
Organized by the NETWORK’s Youth Working Committee, a large multi-day Pow wow will be launched next August. This event will take place in Angrignon Park and will bring together First Nations, Inuit, Metis and non-Indigenous from Greater Montreal and the surrounding area.

Le Projet N’we Jinan is hosting intern Jade Mukash, mentored by Larissa States. The intern will have the opportunity to work with the N’we Jinan team on planning and presenting a festival and conference focused on Indigenous youth and the arts. This event will attract about 400 Indigenous youths and establish partnerships with major local organizations and institutions (among them the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Place des Arts, Concordia University, McGill University and the McCord Museum).
