VOICE 2018: Announcement of the finalists

Montreal, Wednesday, June 6, 2018 – Last night, the names of the Aria finalists of the Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM) were announced following two evenings of semi-final rounds at the Maison symphonique. Since May 29, 38 competitors from 20 countries have had the pleasure of performing in the CMIM’s 2018 Voice edition. While the final round for the Art Song division (voice and piano) took place on Sunday, June 3, it will be following the Aria Finals Gala (voice and orchestra)—tomorrow, Thursday, June 7—that we will learn the names of the prizewinners in both divisions, in the presence of the CMIM’s honorary patron Alain Lefèvre. At the conclusion of the Competition, the competitors will share a total of $270,000 CAD in prizes, grants, and engagements.
 
The Competition comes to a close tomorrow, Thursday, June 7, at 7:30 pm with the Aria Finals Gala at the Maison symphonique featuring the six singers with the OSM under the direction of British guest conductor Graeme Jenkins. The Awards ceremony follows shortly after. 
 
Here are the finalists in the Aria division in order of appearance:

THE PIANISTS

The CMIM is recognizing the importance of accompanying pianists’ contribution to the competition with the John Newmark Award, open to all participating Art Song pianists born on or after January 1, 1983. The pianists vying for this award are: João Araújo (Portugal), Mark Bilyeu (United States), Michel-Alexandre Broekaert (Canada), Peter Dugan (United States), Dokyung Han (South Korea), Felix Justin (Indonesia), Jennifer Szeto (Canada), Magdalena von Eccher (Canada), Jonathan Ware (United States), and Sebastian Wybrew (United Kingdom).
 

THE PRIZES AND GRANTS

At the end of the competition, the competitors will be offered various engagements, and will share $270,000 CAD in prizes and grants, including a First Prize in each division worth over $80,000. Certain prizes and awards in the Art Song division honour the memory of some of our greatest Canadian singers, namely Léopold Simoneau, Maureen Forrester, and Lois Marshall, as well as John Newmark, one of the greatest accompanists of his day.

The First Prize also comes with the James Norcop Career Development Grant ($50,000) and a Residency offered by the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity ($2,500).
 
Maureen Forrester Second Prize
$15,000 – offered by Colleen Sexsmith
 
Lois Marshall Third Prize
$10,000 – offered in memory of Dr. Clive Mortimer

THE BROADCAST

All Art Song and Aria rounds have been webcast live and are available on demand at concoursmontreal.ca/live. Masterclasses will be available on demand on the CMIM website and that of its partner, the Opéra de Montréal. In addition, the Grand Finale will be broadcast live on the program Toute une musique on ICI MUSIQUE and the new ICI MUSIQUE Classique digital radio, on Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 pm. ABOUT THE CMIM

Founded in 2002, the CMIM (Concours musical international de Montréal) aims to further the development of the world’s most promising young singers, violinists, and pianists, while making classical music more accessible to the greatest possible number of people. The CMIM is the only international competition in North America to be held annually and to feature three disciplines (piano, voice, and violin) on a three-year cycle. Since its first edition dedicated to Voice in 2002, 3,500 hopefuls have entered the Competition, and close to 500 have been welcomed to perform in Montreal.
