Montreal, June 14th 2018 – Ms. Hélène David, Minister responsible for Higher Education and the Feminine Condition, today, at 9:55 am in the National Assembly, made a statement paying tribute to composer José Evangelista.

“I wish to salute the brilliant career of the composer and teacher José Evangelista […]. Thank you Mr. Evangelista for your great cultural contribution!”

This statement makes official the recognition of the importance of this great composer and teacher, already honored in concert halls and schools across the country since last September, within the framework of its Tribute Series, organized by the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ).

“This political recognition is extremely important in the eyes of the SMCQ”, says Aïda Aoun, managing director of the organization, “not only for José Evangelista himself, but for all our composers, who can see in this the recognition of the importance of the place they hold in our society”.

A National Movement in the Schools

Through this statement, Madame Minister stamped with a political seal the national movement initiated this year in the schools by the SMCQ around the composer. “[She] allowed, in a certain way, the entry of the voices of some 44,289 children of the country into the National Assembly, who took the time this year with their teachers to discover José Evangelista, to listen to him, to sing his compositions… And to compose in his fashion!”, underlines Ms. Aoun.

Recall that with its project “All Ears / All Play”, that was in its 6th edition, the SMCQ allowed tens of thousands of children across the country to discover José Evangelista and his music thanks to the educational kit (French/English) developed for the occasion.

This vast movement among youth in favor of creative music spilled over into no less than 247 schools in 14 regions of Quebec, in addition to 6 other provinces and 3 other countries. “Behind each of these statistics is hidden hours upon hours of work in class, guided by devoted teachers who believe in the importance of making known our composers to their students”, says Claire Cavanagh, educational project coordinator at the SMCQ.

This movement was taken up by the 51 concerts given this year by musicians from all backgrounds around the composer José Evangelista, following the appeal launched by the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec.

A Word about the SMCQ

At the heart of musical creation for more than 50 years, the SMCQ dedicates itself to the fulfillment of the composers’ work. Through the years, it has established itself on the cultural landscape by the quality and scope of its concerts and activities, which set themselves apart by their unifying quality.
