The Chœur classique de l’Outaouais will perform in “A Chorus of Voices!”, the closing concert of the Classical Spree at the Maison symphonique de Montréal, at 11 am on August 13, 2017. The choir will share the stage with seven other amateur ensembles, uniting their voices in the stirring grand finale of the celebrated “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Gatineau, August 1, 2017 — The Chœur classique de l’Outaouais is delighted to have been chosen to sing in the Classical Spree 2017 closing concert, at the Maison symphonique de Montréal at 11 am on August 13, 2017. Conducted by Tiphaine Legrand, the choir’s musical director, and accompanied by pianist Frédéric Lacroix, the choir will present two works from its repertoire: the Ave Verum Corpus by William Byrd, along with the fourth movement of François-Hugues Leclair’s Enchantements du monde. To crown the event, the choir will have the privilege of joining with seven other choirs, including the OSM Amateur Choir, to perform the Ave Verum Corpus by Mozart, the “Agnus Dei” from Fauré’s Requiem, as well as Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, under the direction of Maestro Nagano with none other than Jean-Willy Kunz at the organ.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime concert and a dream come true for our choir members, our accompanist, and myself! Andrew Megill, the conductor of the OSM amateur choir, and someone who is renowned as one of the best choral conductors of his generation, will be giving the choir a master class and I am sure this will be another landmark event in this amazing musical experience,” said Tiphaine Legrand. The Chœur classique de l’Outaouais would like to convey its sincere thanks to the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and the Alliance chorale du Québec for working closely together on this concert, as it allowed every amateur choir in Quebec to submit an application to sing on this stage. About A CHORUS OF VOICES!

The project came about as the result of a cooperative effort between the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and the Alliance chorale du Québec. A panel of judges made up of choral professionals met at the end of March 2017 and assessed the submissions from choirs who had sent the Alliance an application to take part in this event. Twenty-five applications were received. The panel selected seven amateur choirs from Quebec that present high-quality performances to sing at the Maison symphonique de Montréal in the closing concert of the Classical Spree 2017. The closing concert will be a purely choral event promoting the excellence of amateur choirs in Quebec. The choirs will first be directed by their respective conductors, and will then come together with Maestro Nagano to perform Beethoven’s superb Ode to Joy, accompanied by organist JeanWilly Kunz.

About the Chœur classique de l’Outaouais

Founded in 1986, the Chœur classique de l’Outaouais was originally named the Hull Chamber Orchestra Choir. In 1993, the choir and orchestra parted ways and the choir has performed since then under the name “Chœur classique de l’Outaouais”.

Comprising approximately 65 members, the Chœur classique de l’Outaouais has been directed by Tiphaine Legrand since 2011, and accompanied by pianist and organist Frédéric Lacroix for the past 11 years. The choir performs great works of the choral tradition, as well as new, contemporary compositions. Its repertoire makes it possible for it to assist the development of regional composers, as well as familiarizing its audience with works by Quebec and Canadian 3 composers. Concerts by the Chœur classique de l’Outaouais increase exposure for professional musicians and soloists in the region.

In 1998, the choir won the “Creation of the Year” award at the Culturiades gala put on by the City of Hull for its performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana before an audience of 5,000 people at the Robert Guertin Arena, a first for a classical music concert. In May 2011, the choir received the grant from the Liette-Turner Foundation in recognition of the quality of its performances.

The year 2016, the 30th anniversary of the Chœur classique de l’Outaouais, was filled with celebrations of all kinds. In fact, May 2016 provided us with an opportunity to increase the international visibility of works by Canadian composers, primarily those from our region, by travelling to Paris and Hamburg to present a series of concerts. Along with the Rockenhof choir of Hamburg, the CCO performed at Notre Dame Cathedral and the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, as well as in the Saint Michael church and the Saint James church in Hamburg. In its solo concert at La Madeleine church in Paris, the choir was privileged to perform new works by composers in our region – Tony Dunn, Léon Colibri and Frédéric Lacroix – that had been part of our spring concert program in April 2016. In Volksdorf, bringing an end to its European tour, the Chœur classique de l’Outaouais, together with the Rockenhof choir of Hamburg, performed a new polychoral work entitled Enchantements du monde by Quebec composer François-Hugues Leclair. And finally, to top off its 30th anniversary year, the Chœur classique de l’Outaouais and MAtv coproduced a documentary that illustrates the passion and commitment of the singers in the CCO: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYu3vRuHTGU&t=94

In 2017, the choir was delighted to be one of 20 choirs who won a competition organized by Radio-Canada and recorded one of the tracks on the CD Chœurs d’ici, chansons d’ici. We performed Luc Plamondon’s Hymne à la beauté du monde. The Chœur classique de l’Outaouais would like to thank its partners that have accompanied and supported the choir over its history.
