Canadians Timothy Chooi and Shannon Lee make finals of Queen Elisabeth Competition

After 11 days of competition and 71 violinists candidates, the 19th Queen Elisabeth’s violin Competition  announced their 12 finalists on Saturday, May 11. Canadians Timothy Chooi (25) and Shannon Lee (26) have made the cut. Both will perform the Tchaikovsky Concerto in D major op. 35 with the Belgian National Orchestra conducted by Hugh Wolff. It will be possible to watch live the finals from the Queen Elisabeth Competition’s web site (http://cmireb.be/cgi?lg=en&pag=2030&tab=108&rec=4804&frm=0&par=aybabtu). Timothy Chooi will perform on Friday, May 24 and Shannon Lee on Saturday, May 25.

Around midnight on Saturday the 11th of May the chairman of the jury has announced the 12 candidates who go through to the final!

Final schedule

The final takes place at the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts from 20 to 25 May. Each evening, two finalists will perform a concerto of their own choice and an unpublished work specially written for this year’s competition by Kimmo Hakola. They will be accompanied by the Belgian National Orchestra, conducted by Hugh Wolff. On Saturday the 11th of May, the laureates will be ranked at the end of the evening.

Laureates’ concerts

The 4th, 5th and 6th laureates will also perform in the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts on Tuesday 4 June with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Martyn Brabbins. On Thursday 6 June, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd laureate will close this 19th violin session, accompanied by the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, conducted by Pablo González.

In Flagey the other six laureates will give two recitals (on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 May). Check out all the laureates’ concerts
