MAY 11, 2021 – For Bach enthusiasts, coming to the CAMMAC Music Centre in May for a long weekend of singing, instrumental music and enjoyment of the works of J.S. Bach is a long-standing tradition that dates back to the very beginnings of CAMMAC. This year’s BACH+ event is going virtual, with activities taking place over an entire week.

The week begins with a lecture on Rhetoric and the Art of Discourse in Early Music with Francis Colpron, Artistic Director of Les Boréades and longstanding Music Director of the Early Music week at the CAMMAC Music Centre. Later in the week, Francis will lead an hour-long recorder workshop featuring the music discussed in his lecture.

Participants will discover how the structure of Bach’s music is perfect for dancing during a 2-hour lecture and dance workshop with choreographer and dancer Marie-Nathalie Lacoursière, founder of Les Jardins chorégraphiques.

Vocalists of all abilities are invited to participate in a rare opportunity to sing along with members of the Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montréal (SMAM) in a two-evening workshop and lecture, culminating with an online performance of the Bach Motet Jesu meine Freude, live from Chapelle du Bon Pasteur in Montréal.

  • On the first evening, Andrew McAnerney (Artistic Director of the SMAM) will discuss what is considered to be one of Bach’s most loved motets and lead participants through a rehearsal exploring some of the challenges of the Motet. (This evening’s event will be held mainly in English, although questions can be asked in French).
  • On the second evening, participants will take part in a rehearsal with a vocal quintet accompanied by harpsichord, followed by a performance during which they can sing along with the performers who will be singing live from the Chapelle du Bon Pasteur in Montréal. The performance will be followed by a Q&A period.
