Canadian award-winning puppeteer and marionette-maker Ronnie Burkett is back with Little Dickens, a remix of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, performed with naughty marionettes. Burkett, who also writes his own scripts, appears onstage throughout each performance as he manipulates the puppets and is the voice of every character. For the first time ever, two playwright alumni of the Black Theatre Workshop and the Playwrights’ Artist Mentorship Program present their recent work in a double program: Dark Red by Willow Cioppa and Cry Baby by Kalale Dalton-Lutale. Dec. 10-15. www.blacktheatreworkshop.ca

Written by Jordan Tannahill and directed by Dale Hayes, Late Company is inspired by the real-life case of bullied teen Jamie Hubley, who took his own life in Ottawa in 2011. The play delves into issues ranging from teenage mental health, bullying and homophobia to the failure to provide an appropriate support system to someone in need. Dec. 10-15. www.segalcentre.org

Follow Clara and the handsome Nutcracker Prince to the Land of Snow. The Nutcracker, inspired by the E.T.A. Hoffmann tale, has been presented in Montreal for over 50 years, but the amazing costumes by legendary François Barbeau still turn Fernand Nault’s fantasy into an enchanting journey.
