Whatever the season, there is always live music to catch somewhere, but the sap really starts flowing come spring. The New Trumpet Festival and the Effendi Jazz en Rafale event in March are the first wakeup calls, and by the looks of it the next two months have plenty in store for music fans of all stripes.

For those who like their music with an edge, Monday, April 4, is a good start: The highly touted tenor saxophonist and flutist Anna Webber returns from her New York home base to the city with pianist Matt Mitchell and new Montreal resident, drummer John Hollenbeck.

Four days later, on Friday 8, tenor saxophonist Joel Miller performs in quartet at the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur with a special guest from New York: pianist Geoff Keezer.

Multi-reedman Damian Nisenson stages his fourth two-day event at the crossroads of jazz and world music. On Tuesday 12, at La Vitrola, a voice-accordion duo from Italy opens, followed by the brassy Fanfare Jarry. At Sala Rossa, the next night, the quintet Solawa (with Nisenson) and the Mismar Ensemble share the bill.

On Saturday 16, Alain Bédard, bassist and Effendi Records boss, launches Circum Continuum, the latest offering of his quartet Auguste, with Samuel Blais (reeds), Felix Stüssi (pno) and Michel Lambert (drums). The Dexter Goldberg trio from France opens the evening, held at l’Astral. Showtime: 8PM.

In 2011, UNESCO proclaimed the last Saturday of April as International Jazz Day. On the 30th, there will be a host of events world-wide, with a major concert in Washington DC, broadcast live on Internet. In Montreal, Divertissement Mercier stages its second event in collaboration with Les Belles Soirées and La Vitrine culturelle. On the bill: vocalist Sonia Johnson with Marianne Trudel and Rémi-Jean Leblanc, Rimouski pianist Emie-R. Roussel and her trio and the Jazzamboka collective with guest saxophonist Jean-Pierre Zanella.

On Saturday, May 7, a month after its show with guests Philippe Côté and Dave Binney (see here), the ONJ Montreal returns to l’Astral to perform classic arrangements by Gil Evans and present the premiere of a brand new work commissioned by the orchestra to one of its charter members, trombonist Jean-Nicolas Trottier.

On Tuesday, May 11, German firebrand saxophonist Peter Brötzmann blows into the Sala Rossa with a slightly unusual lineup that includes bass, drums and vibraphone. Also at the same spot, but on June 2, AACM stalwart trumpeter Leo Smith (see book review below) first performs in concert with his stellar Golden Quartet (Anthony Davis, John Lindberg and Pheroan AkLaff) and then gives a talk on his music the following day.
