McGill University Jazz Program Welcomes Special Guest

On the eve of the Off festival, (Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m.), McGill University stages a concert with a guest artist, double bassist Greg Cohen. Associated primarily with the jazz avant-garde, most notably John Zorn’s epochal Masada quartet as well as one of the final groups of the late Ornette Coleman, this American bassist is thoroughly versed in all forms of jazz, including its most traditional ones. He comes to Montreal for a week to prepare a program of music celebrating its most famous icon, Louis Armstrong. In March 2020, drummer Terri Lynn Carrington will come to the university for a week-long residency.

ONJ: Something Old, Something New…

Now entering its seventh concert season, the Orchestre national de jazz Montréal has four shows on tap in as many months. On Sept. 14, it tackles the music of Miles Davis   from his seminal 1960s recording Miles Smiles, just a month before the launching of the band’s long-awaited third recording on closing night of the Off festival. On Nov. 9, the group welcomes Swedish pianist Maggi Olin in a program entitled Échange nordique II, followed by guest vocalist Elisabeth Sheppard and her show Chanson d’ici on Dec. 7. Stalwart trombonist Jean-Nicolas Trottier will be prominently featured throughout, both as head arranger and musical director of all shows but the third.
