Italian media Siricusa News (Syracuse News in Sicily, Italy) reports the death of Italian tenor Marcello Giordani suddenly this afternoon at 56 years old due to a heart attack. Giordani felt bad at his home in Augusta, Sicily. “The attempts to revive him for more than an hour by the doctors of an ambulance were also futile,” explains this media. Just a month ago, Giordani played the role of Calaf, from the Puccini’s opera Turandot, directed by Enrico Stinchelli in the theater of Taormina and in the Greek theater of Syracuse. Turandot the last of a series of successes in a career that led him to sing in theaters around the world: London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, San Francisco, in roles such as Cavaradossi in Tosca, Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana and Don José in Carmen.

Giordani studied in Milan with Nino Carta and in 1986 debuted in Rigoletto at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. In 1988 he did the same in La Scala in La bohème and in North America as Nadir in Les pêcheurs de perles in Portland, followed by San Francisco Opera, Seattle, Los Angeles Opera and Philadelphia. His debut at the Metropolitan in New York was in 1993 with L’elisir d’amore. In 1995 he sang in La traviata in Covent Garden under the direction of Sir Georg Solti, as well as Benvenuto Cellini and Il pirata at the Met. Throughout his career he sang at the Opernhaus Zürich, Wiener Staatsoper, National Opera of Paris, Grand Theater of the Lyceum, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Houston Grand Opera, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Rome, Parma, Teatro Massimo, Verona, and Verbier. He was married since 1990 to Vilma Giordani and has two children.
