Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)

Alto\Fest

Sept. 23-25

The first edition of this festival celebrating the viola in all its forms will take place at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. Alto\Fest will be a relaxed showcase of viola players in a festive atmosphere, complete with food and drink. Three days of themed concerts, including a violin and bow making workshop and an open stage. www.alto-fest.com

 

Culture Days

Sept. 23 to Oct. 16

Until mid-October, Canadian arts and culture will be celebrated with thousands of free ­participatory events across the country, both in person and online. The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation will be marked on Sept. 30, to honour missing children and ­residential school survivors and their families, and to recognize and better understand the history and harm done to Indigenous peoples in Canada. www.culturedays.ca

 

Les couleurs de l’orgue

Oct. 2-30

The triennial Festival of the Canadian International Organ Competition returns to the organ capital this year, with leading players of the instrument performing every Sunday in October in the Chapel of the Priests of Saint-Sulpice at the Domaine du Fort de la ­Montagne. Events between performances will include a cinematic concert presentation of the film Nosferatu, with Peter Krasinski at the organ, nightly opportunities to discover new works by local composers, and a gala concert with Aaron Tan and former laureate Christian Lane. These events will be presented in various churches across Montreal. www.ciocm.org

Montreal Bach Festival

Oct. 5- Nov. 25

Experience the baroque through a program for everyone: a children’s concert under the direction of Francis Choinière, Les Violons du Roy under the direction of Nicolas Ellis, Sir András Schiff playing the Goldberg Variations. Other exciting performers include Luc Beauséjour, Filippo Gorini, Eva Gevorgyan, Ensemble Masques, Thomas Dunford and Christian ­Tetzlaff. In addition, the great Japanese ­conductor Masaaki Suzuki will lead the ­Montreal Bach Festival Orchestra and the Choir in concert. Off-Bach has been working since 2019 to make classical music programming accessible, and often free, in the months of November and December. The program, mostly comprised of artists from Quebec, is complemented by occasional appearances by international artists performing at the ­Montreal Bach Festival. www.festivalbachmontreal.com

 

OFF Jazz

Oct. 6-15

With three emblematic Montreal ­locations (Place Ville Marie, Jacques Cartier Bridge and the Farine Five Roses mill) as ­concert spaces, the OFFJazz will sound the trumpets all across the island of Montreal! Carnaval des couleurs

Oct. 7-9

Montreal’s Carnaval des couleurs has brought together Montreal’s BIPOC, LGBTQ and artistic communities since 2018. The festival, which takes place in the Quartier des Spectacles over Thanksgiving weekend, offers an opportunity for the general public to come together to discover the talents, cultures and flavours that make up the great cultural ­mosaic that is Montreal, in an inclusive ­atmosphere! www.carnavaldescouleurs.org

 

Akousma

Oct. 11-14

The Akousma Immersive Digital Music Festival, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, is dedicated to immersive multi-track acousmatic music. The program has yet to be announced but, in the meantime, events are held throughout the year as part of the Electrochoc Soundwich series. The Acousmatique Competition, which is open to acousmatic music composers of all ages and nationalities, will provide the opportunity for three finalists to present their works in concert at the Festival’s 18th edition.  www.akousma.ca

FIKAS Festival

Oct. 17- 23

Inaugurated in 2016, the Festival Immersif de Kultur et d’Art Scandinave/Nordique (FIKAS) returns in October after a three-year hiatus. From music to film to workshops and meetings, the multidisciplinary festival invites the public to celebrate Nordic and Scandinavian cultures. The events take place in different ­locations across Montreal. www.fikasfest.com

 

Reverdies Medieval Days

Oct. 19-24

Reverdies has announced the 2022 edition of their Medieval Days, in collaboration with Bourgie Hall. Interested in a weekend of ­immersion in the fascinating world of the troubadours and trobairitz of the 12th and 13th centuries? The Occitan Quest offers concerts, musical workshops for all, banquets and ­master classes for professionals. The festival, which takes place at Westmount Park United Church, is open to music lovers, experienced musicians and beginners, singers, instrumentalists and listeners. www.reverdiesmontreal.org

 

Montreal Choral Festival

Oct. 21-23

As the “Flagship Ambassador Choir,” the Chœur du Plateau will present the first edition of its Choral Festival, an event during which choral conductors, choristers and composers are welcomed to exchange and share musically.

The festival highlights the music of living composers, and will include world premières. The festival will seek to highlight women ­composers and women in musical leadership in particular. In the closing concert, the Chœur du Plateau will present the world ­première of a work by Katia Makdissi-Warren, commissioned in celebration of the choir’s 10th anniversary, and created in collaboration with dancer Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo. www.festivalchoralmontreal.ca

 

Festival Unisson

Nov. 18-20

The Festival Unisson invites spectators to sign up for a one-on-one encounter with a mystery musician during a 15-minute immersive experience. Inspired by Marina Abramović’s ­performance piece The Artist is Present and 1:1 CONCERTS in Germany (official partner of the event), each recital is based on a work from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and will be specially created for the occasion. The ticket price includes access to the museum on the day of the concert. www.festivalunisson.com
