The link between dance and sacred song in Western culture goes back at least as far as ancient Greece. For its newest program, Ensemble Scholastica has enlisted the help of renowned historical dance specialist Marie-Nathalie Lacoursière to reimagine the ways in which the medieval clergy and their congregations moved through and danced in the church. From solemn procession to ecstatic expressions of joy, medieval dances were imbued with meaning. Among the most striking was the dance of the labyrinth, in which clerics danced along a circular maze, re-enacting Christ’s confrontation with Satan and subsequent return to Paradise. Dance served to accompany and complement the beauty of sacred song. As always, the voices of Ensemble Scholastica will resound in a sumptuous acoustic. Join us on November 11th as we dance and sing in Montreal’s luminous Sacré-Coeur-de-Jésus Church, a truly glorious setting for this innovative program of medieval music.
