Montreal, October 17, 2017 — For immediate release. To open its season, the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal (ECM +) is presenting a must-attend concert for both fans of musical discovery, with three internationally renowned composers, as well as devotees of the music of Ana Sokolović, one of ECM+’s iconic composers. The concert takes place on November 14, 2017 at the Salle de concert du Conservatoire de musique de Montréal.
As part of the 2017 edition of World New Music Days, presented by the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) and being hosted in Canada this year, ECM+ will first perform in Vancouver before returning to Montreal for an encore performance.

Audiences will hear recent works by composers from various ISCM member countries, including Martin Rane Bauck (Norway), Iñaki Estrada (Spain) and Grzegorz Pieniek (Poland). The concert will also be a rare opportunity to take the pulse of contemporary music around the world, with works that span a broad musical spectrum.

“The composers express themselves with highly contrasting styles of writing: the virtuosity of Iñaki Estrada—who makes room for the creativity of each instrumentalist—is a foil to the conceptual and minimalist music of Martin Bauck. And Pienieck’s piece seduces by bringing sound and resonance to centre stage.” – Véronique Lacroix, artistic director and conductor

Two works by Ana Sokolović, including the premiere of her violin concerto Evta, which is heavily influenced by Gypsy violin music played in the Balkans, are also on the bill for this event.
Pesma, the second Sokolović work, also reflects the international dimension of the concert. Performed by Krisztina Szabó, this masterpiece of the composer’s repertoire is a vocal work based on a poem sung in five languages (Serbian, Arabic, French, Indonesian and Niger-Kordofanian).

An evening of contrasts that offers the public a chance to hear works that are rarely performed here and to enjoy a varied musical geography while kicking off the 30th anniversary season on a festive note.
