On Sept. 18-19 and April 22-23, 2022, the Maison de la musique de Sorel-Tracy presents Le piano de Rachmaninov : l’intégrale under the artistic direction of Richard Raymond, with master of ceremonies André Champagne and host Georges Nicholson, as 15 talented pianists. On the menu of this unique event, postponed twice because of the pandemic: the complete works for solo piano by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

An orchestral component (piano with orchestra) will also be presented on April 21 and 22 with the participation of the Orchestre symphonique de Laval under the direction of Alain Trudel. Rachel Doyon, executive director and founder of this non-profit organization, which is acclaimed for the quality of its rich and diversified programming, unveils the details of the program of this Intégrale, which takes place in four segments (A, B, C and D) for two days: Saturday, A (noon to 3 p.m.) and B (7 to 9:30 p.m.) and Sunday, C (1 to 3:30 p.m.) and D ( 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.), in addition to a round table (4 p.m.) and a meal with the pianists (5 p.m.) on Saturday and a brunch-talk (10 a.m.) on Sunday. These events take place at the Club de Curling Aurèle-Racine.

A true piano marathon

The director recalls the previous presentations, which enjoyed public success: Beethoven 32 in 2018 and the Chopin Intégrale of 2019. She emphasizes the intense character of Rachmaninoff’s music and cites the intensive research into the great composer and his works undertaken by musicologist Georges Nicholson, who will animate the various activities of the event.

I am convinced that Georges will dazzle us with the results of his research on the work of the great Rachmaninoff,” she says. “We will experience this pianistic marathon fully by being made aware of the details of the works, which will be played in chronological order.”

She is pleased in particular with the premiere of a transcription for solo piano of the suites for two pianos written and created specially for the event by the Montreal pianist of Ukrainian origin, Serhiy Salov, first-prize winner of the Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM) in 2004.

The founder of the Maison de la Musique reveals that during the April session an orchestral presentation of Rachmaninoff’s music will take place with the participation of Antoine Laporte (Piano Concerto No. 1), Serhiy Salov (Piano Concerto No. 2), Jean -Philippe Sylvestre (Piano Concerto No. 3), Élisabeth Pion (Piano Concerto No. 4) and Richard Raymond (Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini). This second weekend will be divided into two blocks (E and F).
