As a new part of the 28th edition of the Cinemania Festival, the organizers of this important cinematic event have dedicated a section of the festival’s events to the works of renowned film composer François Dompierre.

The festival will also pay tribute to the inspiring career of composer Zahia Ziouani, who will conduct a Ciné-concert with the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal on Nov. 11, in association with Mezzo, centred around Divertimento, a film directed by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, which traces the avant-garde career of this courageous French conductor of Algerian origin.

“It is often said that a successful film score is marked when one can listen to it outside of the context of the film itself. This is the case with the music of François Dompierre, whose compositions supersede even the notoriety of the films he has collaborated on,” says Guilhem Caillard, director of programming. He underlines the crucial role of Monique Giroux’s collaboration (host, author, designer and producer, president of Écho Sonore), who is behind the François Dompierre Day, which will be marked by the world première screening of François Dompierre: Gestes d’un compositeur, a documentary produced by Cinemania and Écho Sonore, directed by Ariel St-Louis Lamoureux. The Nov. 12 screening at the Cinémathèque québécoise will be introduced by the director, and will be followed by a conversation between François Dompierre and Monique Giroux.

The Knight Facing the New Generation

Two great classics of Quebec cinema, with music composed by François Dompierre, will also be screened that same day: IXE-13 by Jacques Godbout and La passion d’Augustine by Léa Pool. Also of note is the roundtable discussion titled “Great Minds Meet: Dompierre and the Actors of the Future.” This conversation, hosted and conceived by Monique Giroux, will feature François Dompierre, Pierre Lapointe (singer-songwriter), Catherine Major (singer-songwriter-arranger) and Zahia Ziouani. This session will be followed by a musical performance by Catherine Major, inspired by the works of Dompierre.

The Cinemania Festival will be held from Nov. 2 to 13 in Montreal. The complete program will be announced on Oct. 20.
