Furtw\u00e4ngler l&#8217;avait \u00e9crite, par intermittence, depuis 1908 et avait r\u00e9cemment ajout\u00e9 un quatri\u00e8me mouvement pour lequel il nourrissait de grands espoirs. La symphonie \u00e9tait cens\u00e9e \u00eatre son billet pour la post\u00e9rit\u00e9 et il a d\u00fb se rendre compte, pendant les r\u00e9p\u00e9titions, qu&#8217;elle ne lui permettrait pas d&#8217;aller au-del\u00e0 des banlieues.<\/p>\n<p>Furtw\u00e4ngler est mort en 1954 et, bien que son culte en tant que chef d&#8217;orchestre l\u00e9gendaire ait continu\u00e9 de cro\u00eetre, sa premi\u00e8re symphonie n&#8217;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 jou\u00e9e avant 1991. Deux enregistrements ont \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9s peu apr\u00e8s, mais aucun n&#8217;\u00e9tait convaincant. J&#8217;esp\u00e9rais davantage de la Philharmonie du W\u00fcrttemberg de Reutlingen, dirig\u00e9e par Fawzi Hamor, sur un label qui rend de nobles services \u00e0 la musique allemande, grande et petite. Cela a rapidement confirm\u00e9 ma longue impression que le talent de compositeur de Furtw\u00e4ngler \u00e9tait trop petit pour \u00eatre mesur\u00e9 sur une quelconque \u00e9chelle musicale.<\/p>\n<p>Si Bruckner avait \u00e9pous\u00e9 Mahler et engag\u00e9 Wagner et Brahms comme tuteurs de leur enfant arri\u00e9r\u00e9, ce dernier aurait peut-\u00eatre griffonn\u00e9 quelque chose comme la symphonie en si mineur de Furtw\u00e4ngler. Cette \u0153uvre n&#8217;est pas tant compos\u00e9e que coll\u00e9e. Des th\u00e8mes de marque d&#8217;autres compositeurs sont coll\u00e9s sur une vaste toile de pr\u00e8s de quatre-vingt-dix minutes, chaque mouvement s&#8217;ouvrant sur un air que vous savez avoir d\u00e9j\u00e0 entendu.<\/p>\n<p>Le vol en gros de tr\u00e9sors classiques devient si flagrant que, six minutes apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9but de l&#8217;Adagio, Furtw\u00e4ngler commence \u00e0 d\u00e9biter des morceaux de la neuvi\u00e8me symphonie de Beethoven, comme si nous ne l&#8217;avions jamais su. Vanit\u00e9 mise \u00e0 part, il se r\u00e9p\u00e8te (ou r\u00e9p\u00e8te les autres) encore et encore jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 ce que l&#8217;on se demande comment il \u00e9tait possible qu&#8217;un chef d&#8217;orchestre aussi perspicace et atmosph\u00e9rique puisse \u00eatre aussi sourd et insensible \u00e0 ses propres \u00e9manations.
