Aucun grand orchestre n&#8217;a d\u00e9pass\u00e9 l&#8217;ouverture ou l&#8217;intermezzo symbolique d&#8217;un compositeur issu d&#8217;une minorit\u00e9, et aucune \u0153uvre d&#8217;un artiste m\u00e9connu n&#8217;a encore saisi l&#8217;esprit de notre \u00e9poque. Will Liverman, un baryton que l&#8217;on a beaucoup vu au Met, a choisi des chants de compositeurs noirs de deux ou trois g\u00e9n\u00e9rations, des chansons qui mettent \u00e0 mal les mises en sc\u00e8ne plus blanches que blanches des ann\u00e9es pass\u00e9es. &#8220;Pale Hands I Love Thee&#8221; de Henry Burleigh (1866-1949) sonne de mani\u00e8re riche et transgressive \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 des oraisons vaporeuses de Rudolph Valentino et Richard Tauber.<\/p>\n<p>Un &#8220;Amazing Grace&#8221; alternatif, r\u00e9gl\u00e9 par Leslie Adams (n\u00e9 en 1932), remplace la foi humble par une aspiration brute, imparable dans sa vigueur. Deux chansons de Shawn E Okpebholo (n\u00e9 en 1981) rappellent les attaques raciales dans les \u00c9tats du Sud, tandis que Birmingham Sunday de Richard Farina nous laisse avec une lueur d&#8217;espoir dans un idiome narratif tout am\u00e9ricain.<\/p>\n<p>Livermore invoque une gamme d&#8217;\u00e9motions et de couleurs, d\u00e9licatement soutenu par le pianiste Paul Sanchez. J&#8217;ai \u00e9cout\u00e9 cet album avec plaisir et affirmation. Il existe une richesse de talents divers et vari\u00e9s, et ils ont une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de messages pour nos confusions actuelles.
