Les interpr\u00e8tes anglais &#8211; Boult, Barbirolli, Hickox, Handley et plus r\u00e9cemment Andrew Manze &#8211; tendent vers la discr\u00e9tion, laissant la puissance de la musique \u00e9merger furtivement. Les Am\u00e9ricains &#8211; Stokowski, Previn, Slatkin &#8211; sont plus \u00e9nergiques et explicites. Ce sont peut-\u00eatre de vastes g\u00e9n\u00e9ralisations, mais elles refl\u00e8tent \u00e0 quel point les art\u00e8res de l&#8217;interpr\u00e9tation de Vaughan Williams sont \u00e9troites. Aucun chef d&#8217;orchestre vedette non britannique ou am\u00e9ricain n&#8217;a jamais abord\u00e9 ses symphonies. Quelque part au milieu du parcours. Italien d&#8217;origine et londonien de naissance, Pappano apporte la perspective dramatique de son m\u00e9tier d&#8217;op\u00e9ra sans pour autant d\u00e9naturer les doux rythmes du paysage anglais qui sont si centraux dans la nature du compositeur.<\/p>\n<p>Il fait avancer les choses dans la quatri\u00e8me symphonie, o\u00f9 Boult s&#8217;enlise, et il montre une r\u00e9elle col\u00e8re dans la sixi\u00e8me. Ce sont des approches convaincantes et appropri\u00e9es, qui rappellent \u00e0 certains \u00e9gards John Barbirolli dans les ann\u00e9es 1930, avant qu&#8217;il ne succombe \u00e0 la d\u00e9ception et \u00e0 l&#8217;alcool. Le LSO a cette musique dans le sang depuis sa cr\u00e9ation et si la clart\u00e9 de l&#8217;enregistrement est moins qu&#8217;impeccable, c&#8217;est probablement d\u00fb \u00e0 une mauvaise acoustique de la salle et \u00e0 la technique.<\/p>\n<p>La quatri\u00e8me symphonie (1934) montre RVW sous son aspect le plus sib\u00e9rien. La sixi\u00e8me (1944-47) est ruminative et morose, assombrie par les \u00e9v\u00e9nements du monde contemporain. Sa repr\u00e9sentation ici a \u00e9t\u00e9 donn\u00e9e \u00e0 la mi-mars 2020, juste avant le premier confinement du Covid-19. L&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re est empreinte d&#8217;appr\u00e9hension. Pappano \u00e9vite d&#8217;insister sur les textures dans des moments terrifiants.
