S&#8217;il s&#8217;ennuyait en composant, il se promenait dans les bois et descendait \u00e0 la rivi\u00e8re pour p\u00eacher \u00e0 la mouche. Nulle part il n&#8217;y a trace du massacre incessant en France. La sonate a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e dans son salon de Hampstead, un geste de normalit\u00e9 au m\u00e9pris de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>La Romance d&#8217;Amy Beach, dat\u00e9e de 1893, occupe un univers \u00e0 la Edith Wharton qui n&#8217;est que geste et tr\u00e8s peu de substance. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e lors d&#8217;une foire commerciale \u00e0 Chicago et poss\u00e8de une ligne m\u00e9lodique plut\u00f4t charmante qui n&#8217;a rien \u00e0 voir avec le bruit et le sang des industries de Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Une Romance de 1899 du Londonien semi-africain Samuel Coleridge-Taylor n&#8217;est plus en prise avec les tensions de la courte vie du compositeur, sa pauvret\u00e9 et les pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s qu&#8217;il a d\u00fb affronter pour avoir v\u00e9cu dans un mariage m\u00e9tis. Ce que Smart et Uttley font, et font bien, c&#8217;est de pr\u00e9senter ces pi\u00e8ces d&#8217;\u00e9poque sans intervention manifeste, permettant \u00e0 l&#8217;auditeur de tirer des impressions et des conclusions. Le r\u00e9sultat est l&#8217;un des rejets les plus atmosph\u00e9riques de l&#8217;ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Deux compositeurs contemporains sont en contrepoint, une jeune Britannique Kate Whitley et le Californien John Adams, bien \u00e9tabli. Whitley joue \u00e0 des jeux post-modernes avec trois courtes pi\u00e8ces, nous taquinant avec des regards non consomm\u00e9s.
