Et pas seulement des Am\u00e9ricains. Hormis Kalevi Aho et Leif Segerstam en Finlande, David Matthews et Philip Sawyers au Royaume-Uni ainsi qu\u2019un ou deux autres en Russie et en Allemagne, les compositeurs semblent avoir abandonn\u00e9 la symphonie au 21e si\u00e8cle. On pr\u00e9tend que le public a perdu int\u00e9r\u00eat. Est-ce vraiment le cas\u00a0? En ces temps de COVID, nous n&#8217;avons aucun moyen d\u2019en juger, \u00e0 moins que la symphonie soit sur disque.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-836418\" src=\"https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/8.559852.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/8.559852.jpg 500w, https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/8.559852-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/8.559852-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/8.559852-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/>Rouse, un expressif talent \u00e9manant de Baltimore, a \u00e9crit des symphonies toute sa vie, six en tout. Il \u00e9tait toujours en train d\u2019en \u00e9crire une nouvelle. Il a \u00e9galement compos\u00e9 onze concertos et un requiem. Son attention \u00e9tait fix\u00e9e sur le son orchestral et sur le moyen de l\u2019adapter au public moderne. Sa <i>Symphonie no\u00a05<\/i> fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 Beethoven dans des citations parcellaires de phrases musicales \u2212 pas tant en guise d\u2019hommage au ma\u00eetre qu\u2019en tant que commentaire descriptif sur le th\u00e8me du Destin et sur son potentiel de mener \u00e0 une conversation orchestrale \u00e0 bien plus grande \u00e9chelle.<\/p>\n<p>Rouse \u00e9tait imposant, imp\u00e9tueux et bruyant, mais aussi d\u00e9licat et raffin\u00e9. Il a employ\u00e9 la harpe pleinement et a permis aux cordes de dominer l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re m\u00eame dans les passages les plus bruyants. Son traitement de la couleur orchestrale est virtuose. Sa connaissance du go\u00fbt et de la tol\u00e9rance du public justifie la dur\u00e9e restreinte (tout juste trente minutes) de la symphonie. Giancarlo Guerrero dirige l&#8217;excellent Orchestre symphonique de Nashville avec souplesse et subtilit\u00e9. La demi-heure passe tr\u00e8s vite.<\/p>\n<p>Deux autres morceaux de l&#8217;album \u2212 <i>Supplica<\/i> (2013) et <i>Concerto pour orchestre <\/i>(2008) \u2013 pr\u00e9sentent le contraste entre le calme de l\u2019esprit et la puissance instrumentale fulgurante. Je commence \u00e0 penser que ce ne sont pas de grandes symphonies que Chris Rouse a \u00e9crites, mais une tr\u00e8s intime s\u00e9rie de lettres d&#8217;amour \u00e0 l&#8217;orchestre.
